Прилагательные barbarian и barbarous [ʹbɑ:bərəs] употребляются в значении 'свойственный племенам древних германцев, кельтов и пр.': barbarian (barbarous) age 'эпоха варваров', barbarian (barbarous) hords 'орды варваров'. Barbarous также означает 'варварский, жестокий, грубый, бесчеловечный': barbarous treatment 'варварское обращение', barbarous war 'варварская (бесчеловечная) война'. Barbaric [bɑ:bærɪk] употребляется в значении 'грубый, примитивный': barbaric tastes 'грубые (примитивные) вкусы'.
